Watch repair workshop bench

Why Tanjung

The Difference Is in the Detail

What separates considered workshop practice from a quick repair — and why it matters for a piece you intend to keep.

Six Reasons Clients Return

Each of these reflects a practical difference in how the work is carried out — not just a positioning statement.

Specialist Knowledge of Carriage Clocks

Platform escapements, grande sonnerie trains, and French movement architecture — areas many general repairers decline to touch. We work in this territory regularly.

Written Service Records

Every movement service produces a written summary: what was cleaned, what was replaced, what the regulation result was, and what to monitor going forward.

Multi-Position Regulation

Regulation across multiple positions and temperatures — producing results that hold in actual wear, not only during a single-position bench test.

Assessment Before Commitment

Every piece is examined and assessed before any work begins. Scope and cost are confirmed before we proceed — no surprises at collection.

Pressure Testing Included

Crystal replacements are pressure-tested where the case design permits — a step that confirms seal integrity before the watch leaves, not after problems appear.

A Permanent, Visitable Atelier

Not a postal-only service, not a pop-up counter. A fixed workshop in Johor Bahru you can visit, where you can speak with the people attending to your piece.

What Each Benefit Means in Practice

Professional Expertise

Over 18 years of specialist practice

The lead horologist at Tanjung has been working with mechanical movements for over eighteen years, with specific depth in carriage clock platform escapements and striking trains. This is not general watchmaking knowledge applied cautiously — it is repeated, direct experience with the particular tolerances and behaviours of these movements.

  • Carriage clock varieties including grande sonnerie
  • Mechanical and automatic wristwatch calibres
  • Vintage and non-standard crystal profiles
  • Open communication about limits when relevant

Workshop Process

Systematic, documented, consistent

The service sequence at Tanjung follows a consistent pattern for each job type — not a variable approach depending on who is at the bench that day. Ultrasonic cleaning, correct lubricant application by component type, and documented regulation results are standard, not premium additions.

  • Ultrasonic component cleaning as standard
  • Lubricant selection matched to movement requirements
  • Regulation recorded across positions
  • Written summary produced for every movement service

Client Communication

Transparent at every stage

Many repair shops complete work and present a bill. At Tanjung, what was found and what was done is communicated before, during, and after service — so you understand what your piece needed and what it received. Questions are welcomed, not deflected.

  • Assessment shared before work begins
  • Cost confirmed before proceeding
  • Progress updates for longer jobs
  • Collection conversation covering what was done

Value and Pricing

Set rates, no hidden additions

Service rates at Tanjung are set and published — RM 810 for crystal replacement, RM 1,340 for movement service and regulation, RM 1,420 for carriage clock restoration. If the assessment reveals additional work needed, this is discussed and confirmed before proceeding. The published rate is the starting point, not a figure that expands unexpectedly.

  • Published pricing for all three services
  • Any additional scope discussed and agreed first
  • No labour added without client knowledge
  • Written record of what was included

Results and Outcomes

Work that holds in actual use

A movement service is not complete when it runs on the bench — it is complete when it performs reliably across the positions and temperatures it will actually encounter in use. Tanjung regulates across multiple positions and temperatures to produce results that hold when the watch is worn, not only when it is observed in isolation.

  • Multi-position regulation as standard
  • Test observation period before collection
  • Pressure test for crystal replacements where applicable
  • Care recommendations included in service summary

Distinct to Tanjung

What You Will Not Find Elsewhere

The Service Log

Every movement service at Tanjung produces a written service log — a record of what was cleaned, what was replaced, what regulation figures were achieved, and any future care recommendations. This document accompanies the piece and is worth keeping with it.

Honest Timeline Estimates

Service windows are communicated at intake — not inflated to set low expectations, not shortened to win the job. If sourcing extends a timeline, we tell you promptly rather than leaving you without an update.

Vintage Crystal Sourcing

Non-standard profiles from vintage cases are not declined — they are measured precisely and sourced from specialist suppliers. This often takes longer, and we say so upfront rather than fitting something approximate.

Workshop-Level Relationship

Clients who bring pieces to Tanjung are able to speak directly with the person attending to their piece — not a counter staff member relaying information from a back room they have never entered.
