Our Story
A Workshop That Holds Its Own Pace
Tanjung exists for the kind of client who cares about what happens inside the case — not just how it looks coming back.

Tanjung — The Atelier
The name Tanjung refers to a headland — a place that stands at the edge of things, steady and oriented. It felt like a fitting name for a workshop built around the steady attention that mechanical timepieces require.
The atelier was established in Johor Bahru to serve clients across southern Malaysia who wanted an alternative to chain-store servicing — somewhere they could bring a piece with a history and trust that it would be handled accordingly. Our work covers three main areas: carriage clock restoration, watch crystal replacement, and full movement service and regulation.
What separates the work here from a generic repair counter is largely a matter of pace and transparency. Each assessment happens before any work begins. Pricing is confirmed before we proceed. Written summaries accompany movement services so you have a record of what was done and what to watch for over time.
We work primarily with mechanical and automatic movements — both vintage and contemporary. For carriage clocks in particular, we have developed a working familiarity with the platform escapement and striking train varieties that give these pieces their character and their complexity.
The atelier is at 92 Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, 80100 Johor Bahru. We keep Tuesday to Saturday hours, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and are happy for clients to visit and speak in person.
Our Mission
To attend to each timepiece with the care its maker intended — methodically, transparently, and without cutting corners that would shorten the piece's working life.
Our Approach
Assess before acting. Communicate before proceeding. Document what was done. Return the piece in better working order than it arrived.

How We Work
Workshop Standards
The standards we hold ourselves to are not written on a certificate on the wall — they are built into the sequence of each job.
Assessment Before Work
Every piece is examined and assessed before any work begins. The client receives a clear account of what is needed and the cost before we proceed.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
Movement components are cleaned ultrasonically — not simply wiped down. This removes old lubricant and debris from tolerances that a cloth cannot reach.
Precise Crystal Matching
Crystals are measured precisely — height, diameter, and profile — before sourcing a replacement. Approximate fits that compromise the seal are not accepted.
Multi-Position Regulation
Regulation is conducted across multiple positions and temperatures — producing timekeeping results that hold when the watch is actually worn, not only on the bench.
Pressure Testing
Where the case design permits, crystal replacements are pressure-tested after fitting — confirming the seal integrity before the watch leaves the workshop.
Written Service Summary
Movement services are accompanied by a written summary of work performed and future care recommendations — a document of lasting value for any piece worth keeping.
Watch Repair and Restoration in Johor Bahru
For collectors, inheritors, and daily wearers in southern Malaysia, finding workshop-level watch and clock care — as opposed to battery-and-strap counter service — can take some searching. Tanjung was set up to address that gap, operating from a permanent atelier on Jalan Tun Abdul Razak in Johor Bahru.
The workshop holds particular depth in carriage clock restoration — a discipline requiring familiarity with platform escapements, grande sonnerie striking trains, and the specific tolerances of French and English bracket clock movements. These are pieces that reward careful attention and suffer under hurried handling.
Movement servicing at Tanjung covers both mechanical and automatic calibres. The process follows a consistent sequence: disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, inspection of every pivot and jewel, replacement of worn components where appropriate parts can be sourced, lubrication with the correct oils for each application, and regulation across multiple positions. The result is a movement that keeps reasonable time in actual use — not merely on the bench in a single position.
Crystal replacement is often underestimated as a service. A poor-fitting crystal changes the character of a watch and leaves the case vulnerable. The atelier measures each original precisely, sources a compatible replacement, and pressure-tests the fitting where the design permits. Cases receive a clean during the process, and gaskets are inspected before everything is closed up.
